PSA Announcement! Everyone that you think has amazing hair is most likely wearing hair extensions.

This is one of the best kept Hollywood secrets. Most people with really nice hair have at least a few extensions in. I feel like I want people to be aware of this situation when they’re comparing their hair to everyone on Instagram and Pinterest. The thing about hair extensions is that they are made of the best hair, so they curl really well and look and make your hair look amazing!

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about the types of hair extensions, so I put together a little Q&A of the most common questions I get. Hopefully they’re helpful!

Q: How many types of hair extensions are there?

A: A million. haha Just kidding, but there are a ton of different kinds. The main categories of extensions are fusion (this is what I use in my hair) beaded wefts, tape in’s, clip in’s (which are used just for the day), hand tied, sew in, etc…

Q: How do you style and care for extensions?

A: With the exception of clip in extensions, which you take out at the end of the day, always brush and braid your extensions at night. This helps them from getting tangled and matted when you sleep. Make sure you’re soft and gentle when you brush, this is one of my favorite brushes. Grab your hair and start brushing the strands that are under your hand so that you don’t pull directly on the extensions. Only wash your hair a few times a week and use good hair extension products, including good leave in products. Here are some of my favorite products.

Q: Can I get extensions if I wear a ponytail a lot?

A: Some extensions are better than others for ponytails. I like the beaded or keratin fusion extensions for ponytails because they’re easier to hide and lighter in your hair.

Q: How much extra time do extensions take per day?

A: Extensions take longer to blow dry, so maybe wash your hair less often than normal. Extensions definitely take an extra 30 min to style as well. Tape-ins are easy to put in and out, so you don’t have to plan too much more time for those. But the best part hair extensions is the curl will last for days! Way longer then your normal hair.

Q: What are microlink extensions?

A: Microlink extensions is another term for beaded extensions. I do these a lot for people and they’re good on most types of hair. If you have really thin or fine hair, beaded extensions can be a little heavy because of the bead. If you decide to go with the micro link, they usually feel great and when they’re done right they can look very natural.

Q: How much do extensions damage your hair?

A: If you have thin hair, extensions are always going to be a bit of a risk because you’re adding extra weight to the hair. Tape-in or keratin fusion extensions are usually a good alternative for light hair because they don’t add so much weight. Keep in mind that there’s always a risk of damaging your hair, but if they’re done right you should be fine.

Q: Who do I find to put in my extensions?

A: First you need to find good hair that you want to use for your extensions. I get mine at Laced Hair because they’re super good quality. Find someone who is really experienced to put them in. Make sure that you see pictures of their work before you set up an appointment, don’t just go to anyone. If you go to Laced Hair you can find recommendations in your area.

Q: Do you recommend clip ins? They seem like a hassle.

A: Clip in’s work well if you need thickness here or there, but they’re not ideal for daily use because they’re super heavy. Using them long term can be damaging for hair. If you’re looking for added thickness for a special occasion, though, they do make your hair look amazing in a matter of minutes.

Q: How do you determine what types of hair extensions are best for my hair?

A: Check what kind of hair you have. If you have really fine hair, any extensions will damage your hair a little bit.  I would use tape-in’s or keratin fusion for this hair. Sewn-in extensions are ideal for coarse, curly or thick hair because it’s able to handle them. Another really popular one is the hand tied method! This is a great method for most hair types, you just want to make sure to go with someone that knows what there doing and has had a lot of experience in this specific method!

Q: What kind of types of hair extensions do you use?

A:I use keratin extensions because they last up to 6 months, they’re low maintenance and you can pull up your hair and can’t see them. They’re more expensive up front, but in the long run you’ll save money. I have pretty decent hair without extensions, but I like them because they make your curls look so much better and the curl lasts for days! I normally have one bag (20 strands per bag) just in the front of my hair for a little added thickness around the face. Recently I added 2 1/2 bags in the front and back of my hair. I normally do this myself but since I can’t do the back ones I had my blogger friend Emma do them for me last time!

Q: How long have you been doing Hair Ext and do you take any new clients?

A: For those of you that are new here I have been doing hair for over 15 years, and hair ext the passed 11 years. Since I started blogging full time 2 years ago I stopped doing hair (cut and colors), but I still do my hair ext clients that I’ve had for years (so like 4 a month). As far as taking new ones I don’t anymore :(. But if you are looking for some one good in the Bay area, Utah ,or AZ. I know some girls that are really good at them!

I hope I answered all your hair extensions questions! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks for stopping by!
